ECOWAS Brown Card Scheme Sensitize Police

The Ghana National Bureau of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme will organize the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme Orientation Programme in Accra from 22-23 August for over 120 police personnel of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).

Explaining the aim of the programme to the media, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and General Secretary, Patrick K. Agyekum said: “The Police play a vital role in enforcing motor road traffic regulations which equally applies to visiting motorists from member states of ECOWAS. There is therefore the need for the police to gain a good insight into the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme.”

The objective of the scheme is to ensure fair and prompt payment of compensation to victims of motor accident caused by foreign motorists visiting Ghana from other ECOWAS member states.

The Brown Card Insurance Scheme covers third party liability for injury, death and property damage.

The Scheme therefore guarantees compensation to third party victims of cross border accidents, thereby leading to the realization of the free movement objectives of ECOWAS.

“The Ghana National Bureau, therefore, needs to offer a comprehensive orientation that educates our stakeholders in the whole country in matters of the Brown Card Insurance Scheme. The Bureau will organize similar programmes for staff of member insurance companies, CEOs of the insurance and brokerage companies, the Judiciary, medical doctors, transporters and transport unions,” Mr. Agyekum added.
