First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo
The First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, is to mark the World Cancer Day today at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).
The President of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), Her Royal Highness, Dina Mired, is expected to join the First Lady to mark day, which is celebrated across the globe on February 4.
The UICC President, who is also the Princess of Jordan, is currently in the country to help fight against cancer.
UICC is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) which is made up of prominent people from various backgrounds, who are fighting against cancer.
A press release signed by Godwin Okumah Nyame, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), described the visit of the UICC President as historic.
He said the Her Royal Highness, Dina Mired would visit the Manhyia Palace to meet the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on Monday.
The visiting Jordanian Princess would also attend other public events before marking the World Cancer Day.
Okumah Nyame said experts in the treatment of cancer in the country and abroad would attend the event and come out with solutions to combat cancer.
Kumasi was selected by the UICC as the fourth city in the world and the first in Africa to be part of the City Cancer Project C-Can 2025 during the 2017 World Leader’s Summit in Mexico.
This was after the Kumasi Mayor, Osei Assibey Antwi, delivered an impressive statement, which indicated the readiness of Kumasi to be a key cancer learning city in Africa.
The UICC President’s visit to Kumasi clearly shows that the city is indeed considered by UICC as a key cancer learning city in Africa, the statement said.
