Football Bounces Back But…

Action returns to all contact sports centres in October after months of inactivity due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But President Akufo-Addo has cautioned the strict adherence to the Covid-19 protocols and limited number of fans (25%) at the various stadia when professional football resumes next month.

During his update on Covid-19 last Sunday, the decision, according to the President, was as a result of the fall in number of coronavirus cases in the country.

“Now more than ever, we must be even more disciplined in our adherence to the personal hygiene, mask wearing and social distancing measures that have become part of our daily routines,” the President cautioned two days ago.

“No spectators will be allowed at the training centres, and when actual competition resumes, seating at all stadia will be limited to twenty-five per cent capacity to ensure social distancing.

“The loosening of restrictions means training in contact sports can resume, while Premier League and Division One football will resume on October 30. Players and support staff will be regularly tested,” he added.

The President stated that the wearing of masks remains mandatory until December 14, with the resumption of other sports would be discussed on a case-by-case basis between the Sports Ministry and the federations concerned.

So far, Ghana has recorded close to 46, 000 cases of coronavirus, with 297 dead so far.
