The German ambassador to Ghana, Daniel Krull, has introduced a culinary partnership initiative between Ghana and Germany.
The initiative unveiled at a press briefing in Accra on May 27, 2025 was themed, “New Northern Dimensions –Delights from Northern Ghana and Northern Germany.
The partnership is aimed at strengthening diplomatic ties between Ghana and Germany and bridging cultures through culinary exploration.
The initiative will pair two chefs, Otto Pfeiffer from Northern Germany and Esther Mumuni from Tamale, to blend flavours from both countries and foster cultural exchange and cooperation.
Otto Pfeiffer expressed great enthusiasm for the initiative, listing a number of meals that had so far been developed by the duo.
“We are on the way to creating something new. We made shea butter dip and mixed it with German flavours. We tried to make cakes with shea butter, cookies and other desserts. The vegetables you know, mixed with German flavours,” he said.
He also suggested that popular German meals with expensive or hard-to-find ingredients could be substituted with Ghanaian ingredients.
“Esther produced a cookie made from shea butter, and it’s not like the taste of butter. You don’t need to buy butter from the Netherlands or from France, maybe shea butter is cheaper, so you can make cakes and things like that with shea butter and mix a little with normal butter, but you don’t need so much butter from overseas,” he explained.
Ambassador Krull expressed the hope that the discoveries made will find their way to Ghanaian homes and have Ghanaian flavours reflect in German cooking.
“I like the idea that we share the menus for home cooking and encourage others to share their recipes. We don’t know what will happen when they both go back to Germany, and hopefully, they reflect some of the flavours that they discovered here in their future cooking in Germany,” he said.
