Ghana has expressed gratitude to the government of Sudan for awarding scholarships to mostly female students to study in institutions of higher learning in the North African country.

Speaking on behalf of the government of Ghana last Wednesday during Sudan’s national day held at the residence of the country’s envoy to the country, Babikir Elsiddig Mohammed Elamin in Accra, Hon Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, Fisheries Minister said out of 120 scholarships given to Ghanaian students 90 went to females.

This, she said, goes further to support the government’s commitment of empowering and involving women in national development. ‘Ghana is indeed very grateful for this kind gesture because we truly appreciate education as the bedrock of our socio-economic development,’ she said.

The spirit of brotherliness and good neighbourliness between the two countries, she said, would continue to grow over time.

Ghana congratulated the Sudanese government for initiating a national dialogue through the formation of the national accord and saluted the country on the 62nd anniversary of her independence.

The bond between Sudan and Ghana, she recalled, dates back to the first Republic adding the recent string of bilateral relations has witnessed heightened activities; one of which is the Sudan-Ghana Business Culture, Education Expo last year.

The Sudanese envoy who announced that he would be ending his duty tour of Ghana, as he leaves in August said, he has enjoyed his stay here.

He said he has been able to quadruple the number of scholarships from Sudan to Ghana adding that with the lifting of sanctions on his country, he hopes that the relationship between them would wax stronger.
