Christian Kwabena Andrews
Life Assembly Worship Centre, a church building belonging to Christian Kwabena Andrews, aka Osofo Kyiri Abosom, Presidential Candidate for Ghana Union Movement (GUM), was on Wednesday attacked by some irate youth believed to be his party agents.
They destroyed glass and door frames of the church in protest against the non-payment of their daily stipends, for serving as observers during the general elections on Monday.
The timely intervention of the Odorkor Police Command in Accra averted the possible burning of the church building by the irate agents.
The Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Efia Tenge, said the attackers pelted the church building with stones, resulting in the destruction of the windows and doors.
According to the police officer, the irate agents escaped upon hearing that the police had been called to the scene, saying “We are yet to get the perpetrators arrested.”
She said on Wednesday evening, the Odorkor Divisional Commander, ACP Mr. Baafour Apenteng, upon hearing that the Life Assembly Worship Centre was under attack, led a team to the location to save the situation.
She said on arrival, police observed that the attackers had caused massive damage to five glass windows, adding “Our preliminary investigations at the scene indicated that Mr. Christian Kwabena Andrews, during the general elections on the December 7, 2020, employed some party agents to represent his party at the various polling stations.”
She said the agents numbering about 300, who have since not been paid their stipends, converged at the church premises to demand their money for work done.
“The party agents turned violent and started throwing stones to the church premises, and in the process, caused the damage,” DSP Efia Tenge said.
The police are still investigating the matter.
