Adjetey Sowah
Veteran dance champion, Adjetey Sowah has called on Charterhouse, organisers of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs), to consider adding dance categories to the award scheme.
The call follows a lack of award platforms to celebrate and recognise the creativity of rising numbers of great dancers across the country.
Speaking on the VGMAs stage when he was called to present an award for Best Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year on Saturday night, he explained that in his days it was common to see dancers awarded alongside music makers.
However, it is different these days when Ghana boats of amazing dancers such as Dancegod Lloyd, Incredible Zigi, Afronitaa, and Dance With A Purpose (DWP) Academy among others.
According to him, they deserve some attention from the VGMAs.
“Good morning Ghana, you all know I’m a dancer, right?
Back in the 80s when there was music, there was dance.
And I know back in the days, when they were doing music awards, they awarded the dancers as well,” the1986 Malibu World Dance Championship winner indicated.
“I remember I’ve received awards like Best Choreographer, Best Dancer, Best Group – and presently we have guys like Dancegod Lloyd, Incredible Zigi, Afronitaa, Militants – I mean, we need to help them too. Give them something, please. So next time, let’s make room for them too,” he added.
