UK High Commissioner to Ghana, Iain Walker, was on Sunday joined by a number of Ghanaian celebrities to cycle in some streets of Accra as part of a tourism and charity initiative dubbed ‘The Ghana Grand’.
‘The Ghana Grand’ involves cycling 1000km+ from the north to the south of Ghana, engaging with Ghanaians doing amazing things while raising funds for the Plastic Surgery & Burns Unit (PBSU) of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH).
It is also aimed at showing the positive vision of Ghana to the world and enable different conversations about health, tourism and the environment.
The activity started in the northern part of Ghana, where Iain Walker and his team cycled through various towns across Ghana down to the finish line in Accra at the Black Star Square.
Sunday’s cycling activity started from Senchi in Akosombo to Tema, where some of Ghana’s celebrities joined the commissioner to ride to the Independence Square.
They cycled through Nungua, Teshie and Osu.
Among showbiz personalities who took part in the activity were Joey B, King Promise, Yvonne Nelson, Prince David Osei, Belinda Dzattah, Kweku Elliot, Gabriel Narh, Abeiku Santana, Dentaa, Kofi Okyere Darko, Lexis Bills and a host of others.
The Minister for Tourism, Arts & Culture, Barbara Oteng Gyasi, who spoke at the closing ceremony, indicated that her ministry would consider adopting the cycling activity and make it a yearly festival to, among other objectives, promote tourism.
“Delighted to reach the Black Star Square finish line, sad that I won’t cycle again tomorrow. I’ve learned so much on this journey: about Ghana, about the people of Ghana, & about myself. Thanks to everyone for your support. Ghana is Grand,” Iain Walker said after the activity.
