IGP Christian Tetteh Yohuno
The Ghana Police Service is set to roll out an initiative which would stop traffic police officers from collecting the hard copy of driver licences of motorists.
All motorists have to do when stopped during routine checks is to provide the licence number, and through an electronic system, the details of the holder would be made available to the police.
The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno initiative, when fully operational, would eliminate the instances of cheap bribery on the part of bad police officers and time wasting during such routine checks.
Information reaching DAILY GUIDE indicate that the initiative is part of a broader policy intended to reduce direct interaction between motorists and traffic police officers, thereby eliminating bribery, a practice associated with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) over the years.
Police officers have been explicitly warned against taking bribes and to stop wasting the time of motorists during sometimes pointless procedures on the roads.
Motorists too have been advised against giving bribes because police officers are now being motivated through merit-based promotions.
The foregone is part of a broader digital enforcement initiative, ‘Traffitech GH’, which will use cameras and scanners to monitor traffic violations and issue electronic notices.
Should this initiative be fully rolled out, motorists will be relieved as they no longer have to suffer from the inconveniences caused by bribe-seeking police officers at checkpoints.
