A Junior High School (JHS) student has been arrested for allegedly faking her kidnapping and demanding a ransom of GH¢20,000 from her father.
The JHS 3 girl was arrested by the Assin Fosu Police command to assist with investigation.
Confirming the arrest, Chief Superintendent Cephas Arthur said the girl failed to return home when she was sent to buy a call credit for her father around 7pm on April 29, 2022.
Few days later, according to the commander, the suspect’s father who lodged a complaint against his daughter explained that he received a text message indicating her daughter has been kidnapped and for her to be released a ransom of GH¢20,000 must be paid to a prescribed MoMo account
Chief Superintendent Arthur noted that since kidnapping is a serious offence in Ghana, police did not sleep on the matter as intelligence led investigation located the whereabout of the girl and she was arrested.
According to him, the suspect confessed she schemed the act and executed it only to get the money from her father.
He said though the suspect is too young, the act is a very serious offence therefore she would be processed for court to face the full rigours of the law.
He used the opportunity to advise the public to refrain from faking kidnapping for monetary gains, adding that those arrested for such acts would be dealt with ruthlessly in accordance with the law.
