A senior Journalist, Mr. Adoko running for his life
Journalists who covered the International Peace Day at Sankore in the Asunafo South District of the Brong Ahafo Region were yesterday attacked at the venue by machete-wielding macho men.
As journalists were waiting for the programme to begin, misunderstanding ensued between two factions at the venue.
One faction tried to prevent the other from unloading loud speakers meant for the programme.
The macho men stormed the venue and asked all the journalists to leave.
“One of them used the machete to destroy the chairs meant for the programme. We had to run for our lives. Regional chairman of Ghana Journalist Association (GJA), Larry Paa Kwasi Moses of TV3 started shouting for us to run into the press car and we drove off from the scene. At this time we were afraid to take shots,” one of the journalists said.
“Eventually our seats were destroyed by the machete. We all ran into the press car and asked the driver to leave the scene.
“The local boys rushed to stop their colleagues from attacking us. The traders, especially women around the venue also ran for their lives. We drove back and waited for security to arrive and escort us back to the venue. The security finally secured the venue for the place,” he added.
DAILY GUIDE indicated that the macho men were not from the fringe communities, but came from the hinterland to cause mayhem.
The programme, which was scheduled to start at 9:30am, finally started at about 3pm because the chief of Sankore and other chiefs from the region refused to attend the programme for fear of being assaulted.
The Regional Peace Council and representatives of the Regional Security Council later convinced the chiefs to finally attend the programme.
