Two of the suspects

THREE KEY suspects in the gruesome murder of a Kusasi chief in Asawase, which occurred in 2025, have finally been apprehended after many months of hiding.

The suspects are Jamil Usman alias ‘Babamu’ also known as ‘Guru’, Suleman Yasir Arafat alias ‘Obasanjo’ and Ashaidu Sumbieda, also nicknamed as ‘Eyeshadow’.

The trio were eventually apprehended following a sustained intelligence operation by the Ashanti South Regional Police Command. They are now being held by the police.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joseph Nyaaba, said the suspects would be handed over to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, where the crime was committed.

“Arrangements are underway to hand them over to the Ashanti Regional Police Command for further investigation. In the course of the operation, police recovered the following weapons and ammunition:

“Two (2) AK-47 assault rifles, One (1) pump-action gun, Two (2) pistols, Forty-four (44) rounds of 32 ammunition, and Twenty-four (24) rounds of 9mm ammunition.

“One key suspect, Illiasu alias Abodam, remains at large and efforts are underway to arrest him and other members of the gang who have since gone into hiding,” he noted.

DCOP Nyaaba also said nine other suspects have been arrested for various offences in recent times, stressing that all the nine suspects have since been remanded.

According to him, the Ghana Police Service remains committed to recovering all firearms believed to be in the possession of miscreants, to help reduce crime in society.

He said, “I wish to highlight that the scale of weapons recovered, the number of arrests made, and the links established to the Asawase case underscore the seriousness and effectiveness of this operation.

“The Service reaffirms its zero-tolerance stance against armed robbery and the unlawful possession and trading of firearms, and will continue to pursue all individuals involved in such criminal networks with the full force of the law.”

Meanwhile, residents of Kumasi have praised the Ashanti South Regional Police Command for arresting the Kusasi chief’s killers, and urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to promote officers who effected the arrest.
