Constable Amuzu as he lay dead after the suicide
A POLICE officer attached to the Rapid Deployment Force (RDF) of the Tema Regional Police Command yesterday evening reportedly gunned down his two children and mother in-law before committing suicide with an AK47 assault rifle.
DAILY GUIDE learnt that the wife was out of the house before the incident occurred.
The policeman, Constable Wilfred Amuzu was said to have booked for the rifle for patrol duties when he diverted to his residence at Devtraco Estate in Community 25, Tema, where the incident occurred.
Confirming the mishap to DAILY GUIDE, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Juliana Obeng, Tema Regional Police Command spokeswoman, said investigations had been launched into the incident, which occurred at about 6:30 pm on Monday.
The deceased reportedly booked for the service rifle at the armoury of the Special Weapons And Tactical (SWAT) Unit of the Ghana Police Service at Tema so he could report for his night patrols.
Upon picking the firearm, however, he reportedly went straight to his house at Tema rather than proceeding on the supposed patrols, and reportedly committed the crime.
According to an acquaintance of the deceased, he had had domestic challenges with his wife for some time now. He recalled how on one occasion a superior officer chanced upon his wife making a report about the deceased at the Port Police Station in Tema.
Constable Amuzu was subsequently detained overnight but was released later. It is not immediately known for how long his mother-in-law had been living with him.
The dastardly act has thrown his colleagues into a state of confusion as they pose questions as to what could have informed such an uncanny action by a policeman.
Their remains have been conveyed to the Police Hospital as investigations commence.
