Lebanese Envoy Awards Scholarships To 10 Law Students

Maher Kheir

The Lebanese Ambassador to Ghana, Maher Kheir, has awarded scholarships to ten law students to complete their studies at the Ghana School of Law (GSL) in Accra.

The gesture is part of the Lebanese community’s contribution towards supporting law students from the undergraduate level for the acquisition of the professional qualification in law at the GSL.

Presenting a cheque for GH¢64,000.00 for the scholarships at a ceremony at the GSL yesterday, the Ambassador said the award constitutes the largest since the inception of the programme.

Ghana, he believes, has become a beacon of democracy in the sub-region, a reality which he said demands that brilliant yet needy students are supported to complete their legal education.

He said, “the gesture forms part of the efforts to support the students to become the voice of the voiceless and support minority groups.”

He assured the students of the continuous support of the Lebanese community.

The Ambassador explained that the scholarship scheme is based on merit, and that those who fail to gain admission to the law school after their programmes at the law faculties will not benefit from the gesture.

He said that the Lebanese community will rely upon the support of the Director of the GSL for the identification of brilliant yet needy students so they can benefit from the scholarship programme.

He said that the scholarship package, which is earmarked for legal education, starts at the LLB level and continues to the professional level at the GSL.

Mr. Yaw Oppong, Director of Legal Education and Director at the GSL, thanked the Ambassador for the Lebanese community’s commitment towards law students.

He called on corporate bodies to support law students to weather the challenges they face in the course of their studies.

Mr. Emmanuel Sottie, on behalf of the beneficiary students, thanked the Ambassador for the gesture, and promised on behalf of his colleagues to study hard and meet the expectations of the sponsors.
