KiDi
Singer KiDi has said that his music career nearly ended before it took off, as his record label, Lynx Entertainment, almost dropped him shortly after signing him due to his resistance to change.
Speaking on the ‘Talk No Dey Cook Rice’ podcast, the award-winning ‘Lomo Lomo’ hitmaker recounted his early days with the label, admitting that he joined Lynx with a strong sense of independence and was initially unwilling to follow the label’s creative direction.
“Lynx almost dropped me right after I signed with them,” KiDi revealed. “When I joined Lynx, I was very stubborn and wanted to follow my own path. During my time as an underground artiste, I received great feedback for being a great R&B singer,” he said.
KiDi, who began gaining attention as an underground R&B talent around 2009, said he struggled to understand why Lynx wanted him to adjust his style after he had already been praised for his sound.
“However, once I signed with Lynx, it seemed they wanted me to explore a different style. I was resistant, arguing that people had consistently told me how great I was as an R&B singer, and I wanted to stick to that,” he explained.
This resistance created tension between him and the Lynx team, who, according to him, saw his potential and encouraged him to diversify his musical abilities.
“At some point, it became quite frustrating for them. They recognised my strengths and encouraged me to incorporate new elements into my music,” KiDi said.
Despite his initial stubbornness, KiDi admitted that he eventually came to terms with the need to grow and evolve artistically.
He shared that he had to “learn, unlearn, and relearn” many things, including taking up music production and learning to play instruments like the piano.
KiDi is currently regarded as one of Ghana’s top performers, known for fusing Afrobeat, highlife, and R&B in chart-topping tracks.
