Former President John Dramani Mahama has condemned the alleged murder of ace Al Jazeera journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh.
According to Al Jazeera report, Israeli forces shot and killed Shireen Abu Akleh in occupied West Bank.
Abu Akleh, a longtime TV correspondent for Al Jazeera Arabic, was killed on Wednesday while covering Israeli army raids in the city of Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank.
She was rushed to a hospital in Jenin in critical condition, where she was declared dead shortly after, at 7:15am (4:15 GMT), according to the ministry and Al Jazeera journalists, report monitored by DGN Online on Al Jazeera.
Abu Akleh was wearing a press vest and was standing with other journalists when she was killed.
Another Al Jazeera journalist, Ali al-Samoudi, was also wounded by a bullet in the back at the scene.
He is now in stable condition.
The head of the medicine department at al-Najah University in Nablus confirmed that Abu Akleh was shot in the head.
He said that her body was transferred for an autopsy based on an order from the public prosecution.
Abu Akleh’s body was carried out of the university coated in a Palestinian flag, after which she will be taken to the Istishari Hospital in Ramallah.
An official funeral will be held for her tomorrow morning at the Palestinian presidency headquarters in Ramallah.
Speaking on the alleged killing of the international journalist, former President Mahama in a Facebook post sighted by DGN Online, said “The killing of ace Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh is a most condemnable act. For a journalist who has for many years covered and brought us reports of events in Israel and the Middle East region, we all mourn her loss. It is our prayer that whoever pulled the trigger and any associates will be brought to justice through an Independent and transparent process.”
Mr. Mahama seized the opportunity to also call on government and the Ghana Police Service to bring the murderers of Ghanaian investigative journalist, Ahmed Hussein-Suale to book.
The former president continued that “Having said that, we also note that the murderers of Ghanaian journalist, Ahmed Suale, are still walking free. We call on the Akufo-Addo administration and the Police Service to take this investigation seriously and bring the murderers to justice.”
Ahmed Hussein Suale, who was with the Tiger Eye Private Investigations, was murdered by an unknown assailant in his vehicle on January 16, 2019, at Madina.
He was part of a team of undercover journalists led by renowned investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw Anas into the activities of the Ghana Football Association (GFA).
He was shot three times, twice in the chest and another in the neck late Wednesday night at Madina in Accra while he was driving home by unidentified men.
The murder came shortly after the Number-12 documentary was released. It also came after the Assin Central MP on live TV incited the public to launch attacks on the journalist.
It has since remained unresolved though government promised to remain resolute in seeking justice for Suale.
