The Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has decried the rising insecurity in Ghana under the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government, pledging to take decisive action against armed robbery if elected as President.
Speaking at Zambrama in the Pru West Constituency of the Bono East region, Mr. Mahama assured Ghanaians that his government would deal forcefully with armed robbers, saying “the era of Momo merchants being robbed and killed will be a thing of the past.”
“The general insecurity in the country is a major concern, and we will tackle it head-on,” Mr. Mahama said.
“We will not tolerate armed robbery, and I’m warning those who engage in it that their days are numbered.”
This is not the first time Mr. Mahama has spoken out against the rising insecurity in Ghana.
In 2020, he criticized the NPP government for losing the fight against armed robbery, saying “President Akufo-Addo has lost the fight against armed robbery.”
In response to the growing insecurity, Mr. Mahama has pledged to take action, saying “our focus will be on ensuring that Ghanaians are safe and secure.
“He has also promised to provide low-cost housing for Ghanaians, saying “our focus will be on low-cost housing for Ghanaians.”
Professor Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate to Mr. Mahama, has also expressed concern about the rising insecurity, saying “John Mahama is the right person for Ghana” because of his experience and track record in addressing security issues.
