Man Fined Over No Toilet At Saabon Zongo

THE MAGISTRATE at the Ablekuma Central District Court of the Sanitation & Motor Court, Linda Ammisah, has fined Safianu Ibrahim, a resident of Saabon Zongo, an amount of GH¢600 for non-compliance of a notice served to construct a household latrine in his premises.

According to the prosecutor, B.N. Okai, a team of AMA health inspectors noticed while on their routine inspection that Safianu Ibrahim has no toilet facility in his house so he was served with a notice to construct one.

He was given a period of 30 days to construct a household latrine in his premises but he failed to comply with the notice served.

The accused person pleaded guilty to the offence and was, therefore, fined 50 penalty units which is equivalent to GH¢600 or in default a one month prison term.

This follows efforts by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa and also to ensure that the problem of open defication is curbed.

With the introduction of the GAMA Water& Sanitation Programme & Toilet at Half Price, every household without a toilet can register and pay GH¢2,000 out of the total cost of GH¢4,000 to get a toilet facility.

This programme ensures that households only pay half the price of the toilet while the government absorbs the other half.

People who register for the ‘Toilet at Half Price’ will be allowed to pay in installment as the toilet facility is built for them.

The AMA is, therefore, intensifying prosecution of persons who do not have a toilet facility and have failed to enroll on the programme.
