Man Shot Dead Over GH¢20

A 40-YEAR-old farm labourer at Nerebehi near Nkawie in the Ashanti Region, has been shot dead, following a heated debate he had with his killer (suspect) over just GH¢20.

The deceased, identified as Kwaku Vasco, together with his friends, bought four soft drinks and they claimed to have paid GH¢20 to the bar attendant at Bonkro village near Mankranso.

The suspect, name not yet revealed by the police, who was at the drinking bar at the time, insisted that Vasco and his friends did not pay for the drinks as claimed, and it resulted in a heated argument.

In the course of the verbal tussle, the suspect, rushed to his room, brought a long gun and shot Vasco in the chest at close range.

The bloody incident, which happened around 2:30pm on December 3, 2021, attracted scores of people, who rushed Vasco to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A police report indicated that the police were making strenuous efforts to apprehend the suspect, who escaped after committing the heinous crime.

It disclosed that Vasco lived with his wife and children at Nerebehi near Nkawie and on that fateful day, he (Vasco) attended a funeral at Bonkro near Mankranso with his friends.

“At the said village they went to a drinking bar to buy four bottles of Malt (soft drinks) at the cost of 20 Ghana Cedis and paid the attendant. The suspect who was present at the bar, then accused them (Vasco and his friends) of not paying for all drinks they bought from the bar, an allegation which they denied.

“A misunderstanding ensued between them, leading to verbal exchanges, and in the process, suspect, whose name is yet to be known, went to his house which is about 20 metres from the bar, brought a gun and shot at them and the bullets hit the chest of Kwaku Vasco now deceased,” the police report said.

The police report said, the suspect upon realising that the bullets had hit the deceased, hurriedly threw the gun away and fled into the bush, and he has since not been seen again in Bonkro.

The police have since retrieved the gun and efforts are underway to arrest the runaway suspect.
