The Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Assembly (STMA) is in the process of establishing a Maritime Training Centre at the Takoradi Technical University (TTU) in collaboration with an accredited International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Training Centre based in Palermo, Italy.
According to the assembly, the establishment of the training centre would enable interested youth in the area to study maritime related courses and obtain the requisite training that would guarantee them employment in the maritime sector.
“Apart from the job it will create for the youth in the country after graduation, we can also export some of the labour to certain oil producing countries to earn Ghana foreign exchange.”
The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Abdul Mumin-Issah, disclosed this at a media briefing to update the people of Sekondi-Takoradi on the implementation of the Twin-Cities in Sustainable Partnership Project (TCSPP).
He said, “This is my vision for the metropolis and I have been to Palermo and officials from the Italian city have also visited Takoradi and the TTU’s facilities for the centre. We are fortunate to have the Ghana Navy in our metropolis to help in the practical aspect of the training.”
“So all is set but it is left with the clearance from the Ministry of Transport for the commencement of the training,” he emphasised.
He pointed out that the TCSP project has a three-year duration, “And we are currently in the final year of its implementation.”
He noted that last year saw several activities implemented under the three thematic areas of the TCSP project namely, Multi-Level Urban Governance, Cultural-Sensitive and Inclusive Urban Strategies and Urban Climate Change Resilience.
He noted that the second-year of the project saw the implementation of various skills training models aimed at providing employable skills to vulnerable unemployed women and youth to set up social enterprises.
