Chairman of the Medical and Dental Council, Dr Eric Asamoah, has charged medical doctors in the country to work towards offering the best form of medical care for all patients.
According to him, medical doctors must always be guided by the ethics of the medical profession to reduce all forms of unprofessionalism in the noble profession.
Dr Asamoah gave the advice at the seventh white coat ceremony of the School of Medical Sciences of the College of Health and Allied Sciences of the University of Cape Coast (UCC).
A total of 68 level 400 clinical students were dressed by their mentors to symbolise their induction into the medical profession as medical students.
He said the ceremony alerts beginning students on the need to balance excellence with compassionate patient care, indicating that it helps to identify the characteristics of a complete doctor.
“The white coat is a symbol of professionalism and humanism, and it should be a reminder throughout your stay in the medical school,” he said.
The Provost of the College of Health and Allied Sciences, Prof Harold Amonoo-Kuofi, outlined the college’s commitment to producing determined and dedicated medical doctors for the nation’s health sector.
“The 68 students have passed 18 serious examinations and have certified all requirements to commence to become qualified doctors,” he added
Prof Amonoo-Kuofi stated that the white coat symbolises kindness and, therefore, urged them to treat all patients equally no matter their educational background or social status.
He underscored the need for the students to guard against negative lifestyles such as arrogance in their learning process as well as their professional life.
