Medical personnel taking the residents through the screening
AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem, a mining company based in the Western Region, has organised a medical outreach programme for the residents of New Tokunaso, one of the mine’s host communities.
Over 200 people were screened for various ailments such as malaria, hypertension, respiratory tract infection, hypertension, skin infection, among others.
Among the aims of the medical screening was to help bring healthcare to the doorsteps of the residents of the mine’s host communities.
The people were offered free medication and educated on the importance of living healthy, while those who had severe cases were advised and further referred to nearby health facilities for further check-ups.
The screening formed part of the company’s ‘Mine Community Investment Strategy’ to promote access to quality basic health services in host communities and to help contribute to the overall economic growth of the people.
It was conducted by a medical team comprising, laboratory technicians, nurses, physicians and pharmacists.
“I am happy my family and I have had a comprehensive medical care from Iduapriem Mine,” one of the beneficiaries, Noami Asubonteng, 60, remarked.
Another beneficiary, Madam Elizabeth Ardy, also praised the mining company for the initiative, and called on AngloGold Iduapriem Mine to sustain the exercise since it complemented the efforts of government in bridging the gap in healthcare delivery.
The Head of the New Tokunaso community, Amos Owusu, described the initiative as timely and thanked the mining company for its commitment to ensuring that the living standards of people in the company’s host communities are improved.
For their part, officials of AngloGold Ashanti Iduapriem Mine maintained that the company is committed to bringing healthcare closer to its host communities through such initiatives.
