Melcom Care Improves Sanitation At Akatsi College

The Melcom Care Foundation, a philanthropic wing of the Melcom Group of Companies, has commissioned a five-seater washroom facility for students and staff of the Akatsi College of Education in the Volta Region.

The initiative formed part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) which intends to reinvest into the Ghanaian society by supporting the less privileged and the vulnerable.

As such, about 11 schools, mostly within the Greater Accra, Volta and the Eastern regions have benefited from Melcom’s CSR which seeks to improve sanitation in educational institutions, while helping Ghana achieve its Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) on sanitation.

At a brief ceremony to hand over the facility to the authorities of the college on Wednesday, the Director of Communications for the company, Godwin Avenorgbor, disclosed that the decision to embark on such an initiative was based on solving a sanitation problem highlighted by the media in the educational sector.

He noted that the company has also helped other educational institutions put up such facilities to make learning environment very conducive.

He, therefore, advised the school authorities to take good care of the facility.

He also advised the students to take their studies seriously.

The Principal of the College, John Engelbert Seddoh, expressed the school’s gratitude to the foundation since the facility would ease the burden of students having to go back to the hostel anytime there was the need to use the washroom during lectures.

He indicated that most of the lecture halls were designed and built without washrooms, which posed a challenge to students and lecturers, and therefore the new facility has been provided at the appropriate time.
