Military Troops Storm Bawku Over Conflict

Military commanders arriving in the Upper East Region

Over four hundred (400) military personnel have been deployed to Bawku in the Upper East Region to protect lives and property amid the ongoing conflict.

Residents along the Tamale-Bolgatanga Highway witnessed buses and armored vehicles transporting troops to the Upper East Region.

Information gathered by DAILY GUIDE indicates that the troop deployment aims to strengthen internal security and enhance counter-insurgency readiness in the area.

Recently, a third-year student at Bawku Senior High School was shot and killed on the school premises. Additionally, two students from Nalerigu Senior High School in the North East Region were also killed during a violent attack by unidentified gunmen who stormed the campus on the night of Saturday, July 26, 2025.

While the motives behind these attacks remain unclear, there is widespread speculation among locals about a possible connection to the long-standing Bawku conflict.

The situation has resulted in the Minister for the Interior’s decision to review the curfew hours for Bawku Municipality and its environs in the Upper East Region and Nalerigu in the North East Region and its environs from 2:00 pm to 6:00 am, effective Sunday, July 27, 2025, until further notice.

The military personnel are expected to be stationed at various strategic locations, including Bawku, Sandema, Tilli, and Pusiga/Polmakom, as reinforcements ready to respond to emerging security threats in Bawku and its surrounding areas.

The operation named Exercise SAAGUGA GUGDA, will be conducted under Operation MAAIDA BUURI in Bawku.
