A new advocacy initiative aimed at strengthening human rights standards in the hospitality sector and its supply chains has been launched by the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel in Accra.
The campaign seeks to tackle long-standing concerns about labour exploitation, unsafe working conditions, and unethical sourcing practices that often remain hidden behind the elegance and efficiency of the industry.
Speaking at the launch, Isaac Okpoti Adjei, Esq., General Manager of Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel, highlighted the urgency of identifying and addressing human rights risks within hospitality and supply chains. He noted that such risks include forced and child labour, unfair wages, unsafe conditions, and environmental harm, which can occur both locally and globally.
Mr. Adjei called for robust measures such as supplier assessments, transparent audits, digital traceability, and anonymous reporting tools to uncover violations. He further stressed that action is essential, urging stakeholders to enforce fair labour standards, integrate human rights clauses into contracts, and provide adequate training to staff and suppliers.
He also underscored the need for partnerships with NGOs, labour groups, and government agencies to strengthen accountability, adding that protecting human dignity is not just a moral responsibility but also a business imperative.
“Guests and consumers increasingly demand transparency, ethical sourcing, and sustainability. Businesses that uphold human dignity earn not just compliance but also trust, loyalty, and long-term success,” Mr. Adjei said.
Delivering the keynote address as guest speaker, the Minister for Labour, Employment and Jobs, Dr. Abdul-Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, urged businesses to prioritise the dignity of workers at the core of their operations.
“The dignity of workers cannot be treated as an afterthought in our push for economic growth. Development without respect for human rights is fragile and unjust,” he said.
Dr. Pelpuo emphasised that every worker, regardless of gender, background, or position, deserves fair treatment, including the right to fair wages, safe working conditions, freedom from forced labour, freedom of association, and protection against discrimination.
The campaign launch, held at the Mövenpick Ambassador Hotel, brought together policymakers, civil society representatives, legal practitioners, and traditional leaders. It is expected to drive stronger advocacy and practical reforms, ensuring that the hospitality industry and related sectors uphold justice, dignity, and respect alongside comfort and luxury.
