MTN Ghana has celebrated the media’s contribution to its success in the last 25 years with an awards ceremony in Accra.
The MTN Bright Media Awards which formed part of the telecom giant’s 25th Anniversary celebrations acknowledged media institutions, individuals as well as journalists across the country for telling the MTN story.
Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, Selorm Adadevoh said the awards were to honour those whose works represent the cherished MTN values.
He said the media has played various roles that have contributed to shaping the kind of business MTN has today, adding, “You have been our advocate, our sources of information to educate our customers, industry policy analysts and also our biggest critics.”
He said the 25th anniversary has served as a platform for the business to re-strategise and launch its new focus… “and this has culminated into an emerging platform business which takes us from a traditional ‘telco’ to ‘techco’,” he added.
Mr. Adadevoh singled out some institutions including the Media Foundation for West Africa, Ghana Journalist Association, Sports Writers Association of Ghana, Private newspaper Publishers Association, Institute of Financial and economic Journalists, National Media Commission, Ghana Journalist Association for praise.
Awards
Ten institutions and individuals received honorary awards while 13 awards were given out at the competitive stage.
Chairman of the jury, Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng, said over 76 entries were received and the three-member jury selected the best three for each of the four categories- Print, radio, online and TV.
Editor of Techgh24, Sammy Dowuona emerged as the overall best journalist after emerging the top out of three winners in the online category.
The winners took home laptop or tablet and learning packages.
Speaking with journalists after the awards, My Dowuona said he is humbled for having emerged top winner among very fine colleague journalists.
He lauded MTN for the recognition, and expressed the hope that the telecoms market leader will continue to do more to promote excellent journalism in Ghana.
