Residents of Anlokrom in the Shama District of the Western Region, who were hit by tidal waves last Sunday, are calling for support from government to relocate.

Over 800 residents in the area were rendered homeless following tidal waves that destroyed homes on Sunday.

The displaced residents said the strong tidal waves have destroyed their property annually in the community.

The tidal waves ripped off the roofs of about 191 low-lying houses recently.

This was disclosed by Noble King Dogbatey, an opinion leader in the area when officials from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) visited the affected communities in the region.

The NADMO officials were in the communities to assess the situation and also distribute some relief items such as mattresses, bags of rice, plastic cups and plates, among others to the affected residents.

Communities like Fawomaye, Axim and adjoining areas were also hit by the heavy tidal waves over the weekend.

Mr. Dogbatey noted that the residents in the affected communities have decided to voluntarily relocate, but were seeking assistance from the government.

He indicated that about 200 houses were affected with the inhabitants losing properties running into several millions of Ghana cedis.

“It has been happening every time, but this year’s has been very severe and I understand it has even affected some parts of the country,” he said.

The National NADMO boss, Nana Agyeman Eric Prempeh, said that the relocation of the residents would help address the problems and help them live peacefully.

He disclosed that the relief items and other support from government would go a long way to lessen their plight.

Mr. Prempeh, however, assured the people of government’s efforts to bring a lasting end to their plight.

Speaking in separate interviews, the residents mentioned that the situation had compelled some of the people to flee from their homes.

According to the people, the tidal waves had destroyed most of their homes.

“My appeal to the government is to construct a sea defence wall to protect us from the devastation of the tidal waves,” he indicated.
