Nana To Grace 28th GJA Awards, Winners Announced

President Nana Akufo-Addo

President Nana Akufo-Addo will grace the 75th   anniversary awards of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) set to take place at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) on Saturday, September 28, 2024.

Themed, ‘The Role of the Media in Democratic Governance and Election’, President Akufo-Addo is expected to deliver a speech that addresses the importance of ensuring free and fair elections, and fair coverage of all candidates, as well as the role of the media in exposing electoral malpractices and promoting transparency.

Other dignitaries billed to grace the occasion include Former President John Agyekum Kufour; Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar; Naa Prof. Edmund Nminyem Delle Chiir VIII; Paramount Chief of Nandom Traditional Area, and Prof. Umaru A. Pate, Vice Chancellor, Federal University, Kashere, Gombe State.

Speaking to journalists at the announcement of the award winners in Accra yesterday, GJA President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, said the awards committee selected winners in 36 award categories for honours at this year’s awards ceremony.

Among the categories, going for grabs for the first time is the Akoto Ampaw Award for Democracy & Good Governance, which the GJA announced last year to honour the memory of the late private legal practitioner for his dedication to the protection and promotion of media freedom.

Other categories are the prestigious P. A. V. Ansah Journalist of the Year, Best Female Journalist of the Year, Most Promising Journalist of the Year, and Best Student Journalist of the Year.

“It is said that an organisation or association that does not recognise and celebrate its members is not worth dying for. Journalists often break their backs to get the news, sometimes in very difficult and de-humanising conditions. Which is why as an association, we have always deemed it prudent to recognise and celebrate excellence in journalism and media,” he said.

Mr. Kwabena Dwumfour acknowledged the awarding board, saying, “I remember describing the committee during the inauguration as a solid team. Indeed they have worked tirelessly in selecting deserving nominees in a fair, transparent, and impartial manner. I must say they have justified themselves and merit the accolade- a solid team.”
