NDC Candidate Cornered

A 30-year-old resident of Effia constituency in the Western Region, Joseph Akwetey has accused the parliamentary candidate of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the area, Michael Otoo of securing a fake driver’s licence for him (Akwetey) to search for a job.

According to Akwetey, he played a pivotal role in ensuring victory for the NDC parliamentary candidate in the party’s primary last year.

He indicated that Michael Otoo, after winning the primary, promised to secure him a job to thank him for his immense contributions.

He pointed out that he realized that the NDC candidate was not honouring his promise so he decided to write application letters to some companies in the Western Region for a job as a driver.

“Fortunately, one of the companies called me for interview and when I went I presented my driver’s licence ‘B’ but the company demanded licence ‘F’ for the kind of job they wanted to offer me,” he added.

“So I approached the NDC candidate for Effia, Michael Otto to help me to procure the licence ‘F’, and the candidate agreed to help me.”

Mr Akwetey told DAILY GUIDE that Mr Otoo asked him to bring his genuine licence ‘B’ to help him (Otoo) to obtain the licence ‘F.’

He pointed out that some few days later, the NDC candidate gave the purported licence ‘F’ to his father to be given to him.

“When I got the new license I was very happy and later went to the company that called me for a job and presented the new licence ‘F’ to them. But to my surprise, I was told that the licence was fake,” he noted.

Akwetey indicated that he rushed to the offices of the Drivers and Vehicle Licence Authority (DVLA) in Takoradi to confirm whether the new licence procured for him by the NDC candidate was fake.

“The DVLA also confirmed that indeed the new licence was fake and that it was a criminal offence to hold fake driver’s licence and so I should report the one who gave it to me to the police,” he mentioned.

He stressed that he reported the case to the Effiakuma police who promised to investigate the case.

NDC Candidate Reacts

When DAILY GUIDE contacted the Effia NDC candidate, he admitted that indeed Mr Akwetey was one of those who helped him to win the NDC primary in the area but denied ever obtaining a fake licence for him.

He pointed out that the Akwetey’s father, who was a member of his campaign team, introduced the guy to him.

“After the primary Akwetey said he wanted a job but when he was not getting it, he decided to go to Tema to seek greener pastures and so he came to me for money for transport,” he asserted.

“So I gave GH¢150 to Akwetey to go to Tema and ever since I have never set my eyes on the guy,” he added.

Mr Otoo told DAILY GUIDE that about three weeks ago, some people called to tell him that they had heard about the matter on radio.

“In fact the story is not true, the discussions I had with the guy was about how he could get a job and not about driver’s licence. I have reported the case to the police because I will not sit aloof for some people to destroy my hard-earned reputation,” he disclosed.
