The Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced another plan to escalate its protest against the Electoral Commission’s (EC) refusal to conduct a forensic audit of the voter register by staging demonstrations at the district level across Ghana.
This move follows the EC’s rejection of the NDC’s petition for a forensic audit, which the EC claims is unnecessary as it has resolved discrepancies in the Provisional Voter Register (PVR).
Background of the Dispute
The NDC has been vocal about its concerns regarding the voter register’s credibility, citing potential discrepancies that could impact the upcoming elections.
The party organized a nationwide “Enough is Enough” demonstration on September 17, 2024 demanding a forensic audit to ensure a transparent and fair electoral roll.
EC’s Response
The EC maintains that existing legal and administrative processes for cleaning the PVR have not been fully exhausted to justify a forensic audit.
The commission assured that it resolved discrepancies in 2020 and will do so again in 2024.
NDC’s Determination
National Chair of NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, emphasized that democracy is under threat in Ghana, highlighting the importance of democratic-minded citizens fighting for their rights.
The NDC’s District-level protests aim to pressure the EC to reconsider its stance on auditing the voter register.
Previous Tensions
This development comes after former President John Mahama was accused of inciting NDC supporters against the EC.
The current protests have sparked a national conversation on the importance of transparent elections.
