The Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has disputed the Ghana Police Service’s assertion that shooting incident occurred during Tuesday’s “Enough is Enough” demonstration in Kumasi leading to a bullet hitting a police officer.
The police had initially stated that the demonstration ended peacefully, except for an isolated incident in Kumasi.
However, the NDC claims that police officers fired gunshots and launched tear gas canisters into the crowd, resulting in injuries to several demonstrators.
According to the Ashanti Regional Secretary of the NDC, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, the party had agreed on a specific route for the demonstration with the police.
However, the police deviated from the agreed route, sparking confusion and chaos.
The NDC claims that police officers assaulted and injured several demonstrators, including one who sustained a severe head injury.
The NDC has urged the Ghana Police Service to remain independent and not be influenced by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in issuing inaccurate or misleading statements.
Meanwhile, the police have commenced an investigation into the shooting incident, and the NDC has attached photos and video footage of the injuries sustained by its members to its statement.
The NDC also attacked EC offices breaking doors and windows.
