John Mahama on his way to lay wreath
The leadership of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) yesterday attended the 11th wreath laying ceremony to commemorate the passing of late former President John Evans Atta Mills at Asomdwe Park in Accra.
Former President and NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, as well as Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, also graced the occasion.
Mr. Mahama described the late Mills as a man of humility, selflessness, and tolerance for opposing viewpoints, indicating that his former boss’ legacy is worth emulating as he served the country in all his capacity for the nation’s development.
“Prof, as we affectionately called him, was a distinguished man who served his country with the utmost integrity and humility while building a better Ghana for all, not just a few,” Mr. Mahama said, adding, “We still bear deep scars of pain all these years and are unlikely to forget how we felt on that fateful 24th July 2012.”
According to him, the late President Atta Mills’ exceptional leadership will never be forgotten, as his contribution to economic development resulted in Ghana recording the highest GDP growth rate of 14.4 per cent, with the largest coming from the real sector rather than oil.
“The late Mills governed this country with sensitivity and humility and superintended our economy with remarkable skill. It was no surprise that under his stewardship the nation famously recorded its highest ever Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate of 14.4 per cent with the largest growth coming from the real sector rather than oil,” he stressed.
Mr. Mahama further stated that Mills was the only president whose government managed to keep inflation in the single digits. In comparison to the current economic issues, he stated that “in his days almost all key economic indicators were pointing in the right direction.”
The NDC recently held the 10th memorial lecture in Sunyani, Bono Region, to mark the passing of former President John Evans Atta Mills, which event was attended by the President of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Agyemang Badu II, as well as Yeji Omanhene, Pimampim Yaw Kabrese.
