FLASHBACK: Former President John Mahama during one of the unity health walks
All is set for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to hold its Unity Walk on Saturday, May 5, 2018 in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.
Stalwarts of the party have started arriving in the municipality ahead of the event.
The Regional Secretary of the NDC, who doubles as Secretary to the Local Organizing Committee, Donatus Akamugri, told DAILY GUIDE in an interview that the party has presented a route to the police.
The Police have also not objected to plans to provide security for the participants.
“The Unity Walk in Bolgatanga will serve two purposes- one is to showcase our unity after some misunderstandings after the 2016 elections. We have been holding discussions behind the scene and people have spoken their minds and we have come to the point where people have forgiven each other so that the party can move forward in unity. The second is that the Unity Walk will present an opportunity for the party members to come together and interact with each other and the leadership. Since we lost power, you are aware that we have not had any big event in the region to bring our members together,” Donatus Akamugri added.
Former President John Daramani Mahama, former Ministers, District Chief Executives (DCEs) and other appointees are expected to take part in the Unity Walk in Bolgatanga on Saturday.
Asked whether party members from all the 15 constituencies would be bused to Bolgatanga to participate in the Unity Walk, the Upper East Regional Secretary disclosed that more attention would be given to supporters in the Bolgatanga Central and East Constituencies.
“But we look forward to some few party executives and members coming from other constituencies since it’s a regional event.”
He explained that measures had been put in place to ensure that party members comport themselves throughout the Unity Walk which is expected to start at the Ramzy Park at 6:00am.
Mr Akamugri could not predict what former President John Daramani Mahama would talk about during the event, saying “the former President only speaks on prevailing issues and so I can’t tell what he will be talking about, but it is very obvious that he will talk about some of the things trending in the media and society.”
Other public activities, including a health walk by the Union of May Borns and clean-up exercise by the Bolgatanga Municipality, have been postponed due to the NDC’s Unity Walk.
