President John Dramani Mahama has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of preparing the grounds for disputed elections by accusing the Electoral Commission (EC) and its Chairperson, Charlotte Osei of trying to rig the upcoming elections.
According to him, the NPP’s plan is evident in their recent attacks on the EC and Mrs Osei.
He said that as the Commander-in-chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, he would ensure that the security services deal with any individual or group of persons who cause trouble during and after the general elections since Ghana is a country of laws.
President Mahama said that Ghana’s electoral process has enough safeguards to ensure that no party is cheated in the elections, adding that there is no need for any political party to accuse the Commissioner of Ghana’s electoral body of planning to rig the election in favour of a political party.
“The results of Ghana elections are declared at each polling station, and at each polling station every party is represented, and so our opponents should not prepare the grounds and create an impression for disputed elections because I can see that that is exactly what they are doing.
“They are attacking the EC, they are attacking the EC chair and say she wants to rig the elections for NDC that is because they can see they are going to lose the elections so they want to prepare the grounds so when they lose they will say the EC rigged the elections for NDC,” President Mahama disclosed while addressing the party’s supporters in Tema on Saturday as part of his campaign tour of the Greater Accra Region.
According to him, each political party must endeavour to position two polling agents at each of the 29,000 polling stations across the country to ensure transparent, free and fair elections.
“The elections are going to be transparent, free and fair and NDC is going to accept the results of the elections, and if they lose they must accept the results of the elections, because there are 29,000 polling stations in this elections, in each of the these 29,000 we are going to put two NDC people in each polling station, NPP must do the same: put two polling agents in each polling station, CPP must do the same, PPP must do the same, our mother’s party must do the same, NDP must do the same. And all these agents must sit and scrutinize the elections from 7 am to 5pm,” he suggested.
President Mahama appealed to the electorate to vote massively for him since he has done everything humanly possible to secure re-election to move Ghana forward.
