Oil Companies To Ensure Safety

The recent gas explosion in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis and its negative effects on life and property have suddenly brought to the fore the importance of occupational health and safety in industry in the area.

To this end, the Joint Pipeline Management Committee in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis, has resolved to put measures in place to ensure that nothing untoward happens to communities in their operational areas when disaster strikes.

The Committee has therefore advised inhabitants living close to oil installations to strictly observe fire prevention regulations to ensure their own safety and to prevent disaster.

The joint pipeline management committee is made up of some Bulk Oil Distribution Companies (BDCs), including Cirrus Oil, Blue Ocean Investment, GHANSTOCK Limited and United State Company.

Mark Henry Freeman, Coordinator for the joint pipeline committee, who disclosed this, noted that as part of the safety measures, crush barriers had been constructed along the fuel pipelines in the community they operate.

He was speaking to journalists during a media engagement organized by the joint committee to sensitize the journalists on some of their activities.
Mr Freeman gave the assurance that the education programme would be sustained to avoid disasters, particularly at Poasi in New Takoradi, where most of the companies’ fuel pipelines are located.

Touching on their operations, Mr Freeman indicated that members of the joint committee had specialized in bunkering services and year-long truck loading of gasoline.

“We utilize leading edge technology and proven operating standards, setting the benchmark for petroleum terminal operation safety and efficiency,” he added.

He continued that “we also use automated tank gauging systems to provide real-time data on product inventory levels allowing for effective planning and timely replenishment of stocks”.

He noted that through consistent application of standard operating procedures by trained personnel, the companies ensure optimum utilization of their facilities to meet clients’ needs.

“Environment, Health and Safety are key concerns in all aspects of our operations,” he stressed.

He stated that “the incorporation of safety features in the design of our facilities, as well as, adherence to strict safety policy at our terminals and continuous staff training ensures world-class standards.”
