The two during the visit
The outgoing United Kingdom Defence Attaché to Ghana (UK DA), Commander Richard Walters, has paid a courtesy call on the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, to bid him farewell at the latter’s office at Army Headquarters on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.
In his remarks, Commander Walters expressed his appreciation to the COAS for the ‘worthy engagements’, which had been remarkable and mutually beneficial during his tenure. He also took the opportunity to introduce the incoming UK DA, Lieutenant Colonel Nick Wood, and expressed confidence in the latter’s ability to carry the relationship forward.
Lieutenant Colonel Wood, in his remarks, thanked the COAS and his staff for the warm reception and expressed his conviction that he would have a quality work experience in Ghana.
He looked forward to bringing his expertise and capability to bear to build on his predecessor’s sturdy UK-Ghana relationship. He expressed his belief that, with the solid bedrock already established, the relationship would further advance to achieve formidable results for mutual benefit.
The COAS, in his response, expressed heartfelt appreciation to Commander Walters for his expertise in supporting the Ghana Army, in particular, and the Ghana Armed Forces.
He acknowledged the engagements and inputs that had initiated some capability-building, especially at the Army Special Operations Brigade (ASOB) and the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), for which he was grateful.
He further welcomed the incoming UK DA and looked forward to a very productive working relationship.
