Police File Injunction Against #DumsorMustStop

The Ghana Police Service has filed a motion seeking an injunction to restrain Ghanaian actress Yvonne Nelson and others from proceeding with a demonstration over intermittent power outages known locally as ‘dumsor,’ dubbed #DumsorMustStop.

The application before a High Court in Accra was as a result of a failure on the part of the organisers and the police to reach a compromise on the intended route of the demonstration.

The intended demonstration is scheduled for Saturday, May 25, 2024.

The police, in a meeting with the group, had asked them to change the planned picketing at the Revolution Square opposite the Jubilee House, the seat of government which is demarcated as a security zone.

The police had suggested that the demonstration end at the Independence Square instead, for security reasons.

The police also raised concerns about the organisers’ decision to end the intended demonstration at midnight.

But the organisers of the demonstration are in disagreement with the route proposed by the police and maintain that the Revolution Square is not a security zone.

They also maintain that there was nothing wrong with their decision to end the demonstration at midnight.

The police subsequently filed an injunction before a High Court in Accra seeking to stop the organisers from going ahead with the planned demonstration.

The case is scheduled for May 24, 2024.

Meanwhile, conveners of the demonstration have expressed their readiness to contest the injunction application filed by the police.

Speaking in a radio interview with Accra-based Citi FM last Tuesday, Dramani Selorm Dzramado, one of the conveners said the group will disregard any ex-parte motion filed by the police.

“We will not accept any application by the police ex-parte. We will disregard it and treat it with utter contempt. If the court respects and listens to them and a decision is taken, you don’t really have a choice. But it’s good you said that it’s on notice. So we’re going to defend in court. We’re going to argue in court,” he said.
