The Ghana Police Service has taken a significant step in the ongoing investigation surrounding the arrest of Phyllis Naa Koryoo Okunor, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for Awutu Senya East.
In an official statement released by the police, it was disclosed that the docket pertaining to Naa Koryoo’s arrest is now being forwarded to the Office of the Attorney-General for examination and expert advice.
Naa Koryoo was detained at the Cantonments Police Station after being cautioned on the charge of “transfer of firearms without authority.”
The police further revealed that she was granted bail alongside three other individuals connected to the case. This development comes in the wake of heightened tensions following her detention, which led to NDC supporters converging at the police premises to demand her release.
The arrest of Naa Koryoo stems from allegations of possessing a firearm and involvement in the stabbing incident concerning the son of Mavis Hawa Koomson, the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, on Sunday, June 2, 2024.
Usman Haruna, suspected to be linked to the stabbing, has been apprehended and subsequently remanded in police custody pending further court proceedings scheduled for June 19, 2024.
Reacting to Naa Koryoo’s release on June 8, the National Chairman of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, strongly condemned such arrests and underscored that such actions would not be tolerated moving forward.
In an earlier police statement, it was reported that a Pump Action gun with ammunition was discovered in a vehicle at the offices of the Electoral Commission in Ofaakor, Awutu Senya East constituency.
Additional suspects Abdulai Aziz and Mustapha Mohammed were also cautioned on different charges related to firearms possession without proper authorization.
