THE POLICE in Sunyani on Tuesday killed one out of four robbers who used logs and a taxi cab to block the Sunyani-Chiraa highway at Yawhima in an attempt to rob market women who were returning from Yeji market at dawn.
According to police sources, the women were returning from Yeji yesterday dawn on a Mercedes Benz Bus with registration number AS 9923-15 when the driver realized the road had been blocked with logs and a taxi near Yawhima Police Barrier at about 2:45am.
According to the police in the region, the robbers signaled the driver of the Benz Bus to stop, and he quickly alerted a police escort on the bus. The robbers then opened fire on the bus. The police escort, one Sergeant Simms Anane Mensah, shot and killed one of the robbers instantly. The remaining three ran into the bush and escaped leaving the taxi and logs behind on the road.
The dead robber was conveyed to the Brong Ahafo Regional Hospital morgue for identification while investigation immediately commenced to identify the owner of the taxi.
Chief Inspector Augustine Kinsley Oppong, BA Regional Police PRO, confirmed this to DAILY GUIDE on phone in an interview. He appealed to community members at the area to volunteer information that would lead to the arrest of the three robbers.
