The rescuers trying frantically to save the woman
A heavily pregnant woman is feared dead after she was swept away by the downpour of last Saturday in Accra.
The downpour started at about 10:30 a.m. and continued until around 12:30 p.m.
The unidentified woman was trying to cross a gutter near the large storm drain which separates Nima from Accra New Town in Accra when she slipped.
Overpowered by the rushing water, young men nearby tried to rescue her, but the current was so strong that they risked being swept away too and had to let go the struggling woman who ended up in the main drainage close to the Forster International School and opposite a car washing spot.
An eyewitness told DAILY GUIDE that the rescuers were unable to get a proper hold of the woman, hence the tragedy. “They held her fingers and she slipped, and was swept by the strong currents,” he said.
First responders from the Ayawaso Central Municipal Assembly were spotted at the scene of the incident, and one of them told DAILY GUIDE that “when we got here, the woman had been swept away.”
The major drainage cuts through Nima and winds downstream to the Paloma Hotel, heading towards the Atlantic Ocean.
Groups of worried persons were seen at the scene of the incident, discussing what had unfolded under their gaze when the pregnant woman was being swept away, perhaps to her painful end.
