Rev Dr George Opare Kwapong
The Presbyterian Church of Ghana has confirmed the appointment of Right Rev Dr George Opare Kwapong as the Acting Moderator of the General Assembly to replace Right Rev Prof Cephas Omeny, who is incapacitated.
Rev Dr Kwapong is currently the Chairperson of the Akuapem Presbytery.
DAILY GUIDE learnt that the appointment of Rev Kwapong had become necessary due to the ill-health of the substantive moderator.
He recently fell sick in London when he was on official duty and has since been undergoing medical treatment.
A letter signed by the Clerk of the General Assembly, Rev Dr Samuel Ayete-Nyampong, announcing the new appointment, also urged all members of the church to pray for the speedy recovery of Rev Omenyo.
A source close to the church has indicated that if by the next General Assembly in August the moderator has not recovered, the possibility of electing a new moderator is real.
Rev Omenyo was elected last year at Abetifi in the Eastern Region to succeed Right Rev Prof Emmanuel Martey.
When the Public Relations Officer of the church, Rev George Larbi, was reached last night, he confirmed the appointment of Rev Kwapong, explaining that the last General Assembly Council meeting officially appointed the Akuapem Presbytery Chairperson as the acting moderator.
Rev Larbi was however, not ready to throw more light on the issue.
