Safe Haven Sets October 21 For Breast Cancer Awareness

A scene from last year’s event

Safe Haven Cancer Support Centre, a non-profit organisation that provides support to women, men, and families directly and indirectly affected by breast cancer has set October 21, 2023 to mark this year’s breast cancer awareness.

Organized under the themed, “No Stigma!” Encourage survivors to tell their stories. Start screening at 20 years. Remember, early detection saves lives!”, the occasion will engage a number of individuals especially women on health tips to help reduce the mortality rate in the country.

The awareness day will witness its annual Hats and Hearts fundraiser to support persons with breast cancer.

This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the organisation and the 5th anniversary of the fundraising event. The organization has stated that it will seize the opportunity to highlight the importance of regularly examining the breast and attending medical checkups.

Safe Haven Cancer Support Centre and Safe Haven Cancer Society are organizations that were started after co-founder Janet Brakohiapa went through cancer treatments that saved her life.

Together with her brother, Dr. Edmund Brakohiapa who is a radiologist, Janet started Safe Haven Cancer Support Centre in Ghana with the main aim of providing basic and general information about cancer, particularly breast cancer, and also to bring some awareness and education about how early detection can save the lives of people who have been diagnosed.

Since their inception, the organisations have been a source of information, encouragement, and hope for cancer victims and their families, newly diagnosed patients, and cancer survivors.

Currently, the organization has a physical space which was opened on October 24, 2020.

The centre provides wellness programs, educational programs, presentations, and seminars. It also provides caregiver support, grief support, and programs for the families and friends of individuals who have been affected by the disease.
