Salt Industry Needs Investment – Says Konadu

Flagbearer of the National Democratic Party (NDP) has called for increased investments in the country’s salt industry.

Mrs. Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings made the call on Wednesday while making a presentation at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) Conversation Series for presidential candidates ahead of the 2016 general elections.

The IEA Conversation Series provides distinguished statesmen and women across the world a unique platform to outline their views for Ghana and the sub-region as a whole.

According to her, investing in the salt industry would increase the country’s revenue base.

The NDP sees an opportunity for Ghana to increase its revenue base through the exportation of rock salt to nowhere else but Africa, she said.

The exportation of salt, she said, could earn the country more revenues than gold.

Also, the former First Lady said investment in the salt industry shall help to generate additional employment opportunities for the citizenry.

In that regard, she said her NDP government shall set up factories in four regions in the country, specifically for salt production, urging government to take advantage of the abundance of sea water in the country to increase salt production.

High Unemployment Rate

She criticized government for failing woefully to address the unemployment problem in Ghana.

Mrs Rawlings pledged to revamp the country’s manufacturing sector which has significantly declined under the current Mahama administration.

She also promised to revamp the agricultural sector and help tackle illegal mining known as ‘galamsey’ if elected as president of the country.
