Mildred Adubea Frempong
The family of Mildred Adubea Frempong, a nine-year-old Grade 5 pupil of the Valley View University Basic School, has appealed to the public to assist in funding a stem cell transplant (bone marrow transplant) to save her life.
Mildred, a patient of the Paediatric Sickle Cell Disease Clinic at the Department of Child Health, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, was diagnosed with a sickle cell disease two years ago, and has been experiencing recurrent episodes of strokes, memory loss and nervous disorders.
Doctors have, therefore, recommended that she goes through the medical procedure outside the country expected to cost $97,700 (GH¢390,800).
A letter from the clinic signed by Dr Sudha Rao, a senior resident at the clinic, said the cost of the procedure alone, excluding travel expenses, accommodation cost, and other medical care for the donor in India is approximately US$45,000 if she gets a 100 percent HLA matched donor.
“The expenses are higher than the above mentioned amount if 100% matched HLA donor is not available,” the letter indicated.
Peter Ansong Frempong, Mildred’s father, said the family has spent all it has on the initial medical activities at Korle-Bu and has no more to support his daughter, hence his appeal to the general public to help.
“We have done the initial test and we have found a match for her now it is left with the money for the procedure,” he said.
