President Akufo-Addo in a handshake with Dr Ralph Gonsalves (left) at the Jubilee House
The Prime Minister of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr Ralph Gonsalves, paid a courtesy call on President Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House on Monday.
The Prime Minister was elated to meet President Akufo-Addo for the first time.
Mr. Gonsalves said that the two countries should have an exchange programme, especially in the area of nursing.
This, according to him, would go a long way to enhance relations between the two countries.
He also called for the promotion of economic, cultural and political ties between the two countries.
That, he said, was because the geography and history of the two nations require an initiative of this nature.
President Akufo-Addo, on his part, said that steps being taken to formalize relations between Ghanaians and Africa descendants in the Caribbean and Brazil make a lot of sense.
He said the African descendents, who are very important, should be incorporated in these arrangements.
That, he said, was part of reasons why the Africa Union (AU) consider the Caribbean and the African Diaspora as a sixth region.
Dr Gonsalves arrived in Ghana on Monday for a five-day state visit, having been received upon arrival by Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
He held discussions with African Caribbean personalities in Accra and performed a wreath-laying ceremony at the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and also visited George Padmore Library.
The visiting Prime Minister would hold discussions with Yaw Osafo-Maafo, the Senior Minister, Dr Afriyie Owusu Akoto, the Minister of Food and Agriculture and Catherine Abelema Afeku, the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts.
Dr Gonsalves would pay a historic visit to the Elmina and Cape Coast Castles, the two historic places that played significant role in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, which saw thousands of Africans shipped to Europe and Americas to work in sugarcane plantations.
He would also visit the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and hold private discussions with former President John Agyekum Kufour at his residence in Accra.
Dr Gonsalves would deliver a public lecture on the theme: “Rebuilding the African-Brazil-Caribbean Movement for Trade, Cultural and Diplomatic Enhancement and Reparation” at the main auditorium of the African University College of Communications (AUCC) on Thursday.
He is expected to leave Accra on Friday, November 29.
