Drivers operating at the 37 Military Hospital Lorry Station have appealed to the Ghana Police Service to close down drinking spots operating within their station to prevent drivers from drinking.
Mr. Hanson Blay, Chairman in charge of the 37 Number 2 Drivers Union said even though drivers have been advised not to drink whilst at work, some sneak to have drinks at these spots due to its closeness.
“We often blame drivers for drinking alcohol while at work but the drinks are sold at their work places,” he pointed out.
He appealed to the Ghana Police Service to help the Assembly take off all drinking spots from lorry stations if we really want to fight drunk driving.
This came up when the Airport Divisional Police Command reached out to the drivers to interact with them on security issues as well as road traffic offences.
Present were Chief Supt Bismarck Adjapong, Airport Divisional Police Commander, Chief Supt Eric Aseidu, Airport District Police Commander, Chief Supt Kwaku Bempah, East Legon District Commander, DSP Cecilia Harriet Appiah-Ampofo, Legon District Police Commander and other senior police officers within the Airport District.
Addressing the drivers, Chief Supt Adjapong urged the drivers to report any suspected criminals to the police for prompt action.
He said when giving the police a tipoff, one must insist to talk to the district or divisional commander of that area and not any ordinary police officer in uniform.
“After you have reported a criminal to the police, and he is arrested, do not go about boasting to people that you made the police arrest that person, when you do that and something happens to you, don’t blame the police of giving you out,” he stressed.
Areas also visited included Accra Mall, Tetteh Quarshie branch of GPRTU, and Ayigbe Town Lorry Station.
