The convict, Emmanuel Sam
A student of Takoradi Technical Institute (TTI) in the Western Region has been jailed six months for stabbing his teacher with a sharp object.
The second-year student, Emmanuel Sam, popularly known as ‘Agogo’, was sentenced by the Takoradi District Court last Friday.
The convict was alleged to have attacked the teacher and stabbed him with scissors when the teacher attempted to send him to the school’s senior housemaster for a wrongdoing.
How It Started
The student, on September 23, 2025, used an unauthorised route to enter the school premises.
The teacher, who was on duty, apprehended him and attempted to escort him to the senior housemaster for disciplinary action.
In an attempt to avoid facing the housemaster, the student surprisingly, pulled a pair of scissors from his pocket and stabbed the teacher in the arm.
The convict is reported to have aimed for the stomach of the teacher; however, the swift use of the arm by the teacher to block the scissors led to a deep cut on his arm.
The convict was subdued with the help of other teachers, and later handed over to the police.
According to sources, the convict had a history of truancy in the school.
Charge
He was subsequently charged with the offence of causing harm and hauled before the court where the judgment was delivered.
In addition to the custodial sentence, the court ordered the convict to pay GH₵3,000 as compensation to the injured teacher or serve an additional three months in default.
He is also to pay a fine of GH₵2,400 to the court.
Meanwhile, the case has sparked discussions about teacher safety and the need for stronger measures to protect educators in schools.
Legal pundits have also indicated that the sentence balances punishment with rehabilitation opportunities.
They pointed out that the six months’ imprisonment allows for potential behavioural intervention.
