Tamale Mayor Faces Impeachment

Musah Superior

The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly Taskforce has clashed with assembly members over the planned impeachment of the Tamale Mayor Musah Superior.

The incident happened at the palace of the Dakpema Chief who called the assembly members to find out their reasons for considering the impeachment of the Tamale Mayor.

An Assembly member, Kwame Mohammed Murtala, who confirmed the incident to DAILY GUIDE, said the taskforce stormed the palace, insulted and threatened the Assembly members who were waiting for the chief.

According to him, members of the taskforce, numbering about 50, rushed on them and started hurling insults, adding that but for the timely intervention of some residents at the Dakpema palace, it would have been bloody.

“They were insulting us for saying that they should be sacked from the assembly.”

Kwame Mohammed Murtala indicated that chiefs, opinion leaders and religious leaders have called them to intervene on behalf of the Tamale Mayor.

The majority of Tamale Metropolitan Assembly Members are calling for the impeachment of Iddrisu Musah Superior, the chief executive of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly over certain infractions, his dictatorial tendencies and mismanagement of funds of the Assembly.

The members are calling for a ‘vote of no confidence’ to be passed in the Mayor for certain breaches.

Superior has been accused of awarding fraudulent contracts, dishonestly violating the laws of the assembly.

They have also accused the Mayor of using the assembly’s woefully inadequate resources to finance his ‘boys’ to the neglect of staff of the assembly.

It is alleged that the mayor spends at least GH¢1,400 monthly on each ‘boy.’

According to the Assembly members, the mayor had constituted a non-functional 61 member Taskforce whom he pays GH¢9,150.00, which is slowly depleting the coffers of the Assembly.

In pursuance of Article 243 Clause 3(a) of the 1992 constitution of Ghana and section 20 Sub Section 4 (a) of the local government Act, 936, 2016, the petitioners passed  a resolution on Wednesday, October 25, 2017, invoking the coordinating director to summon a meeting for the impeachment process to start.

Meanwhile, the Presiding Member Abu Takoro, who confirmed that he had received the petition, said a letter would be written to the Tamale Mayor to respond to the allegations.

According to him, the mayor has one week to react to the letter and afterwards the Electoral Commission (EC) would be invited to supervise a general house meeting.

“Those who are in favour of the impeachment must get 67%, but if they are not able to get that, then the impeachment will not be possible.”
