It is unusual in Ghana’s political history for a political party not in government to attract more celebrity endorsements than the incumbent party just some 70 days to general polls, but the New Patriotic Party (NPP) seems to have won the hearts of the country’s most popular showbiz names.
A growing number of Ghana’s finest film makers, musicians and stakeholders within the creative arts sphere are flocking towards the NPP and publicly campaigning for the party’s presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo.
Among the several creative arts stakeholders who have openly endorsed the NPP and the candidature of Nana Akufo-Addo are actor and movie producer, Agya Koo, highlife singer Lucky Mensah, award-winning gospel singer, Cwesi Oteng, sensational hiplife artiste, Wisa Greid, actress Bibi Bright, Matilda Asare, movie producer Socrate Safo, highlife singer Dada KD, sound engineer and music producer, Fred Kyei Mensah, musician Barima Sidney, musician A-Plus, among others.
NEWS-ONE takes a glimpse into what exactly the celebs said about the NPP and its candidate, Nana Akufo Addo:
AGYA KOO
The popular actor has formed a campaign task force by name ‘Agya Koo Agenda 57 for Nana Addo’ and has started a vigorous campaign for Nana Akufo-Addo to win the December general polls with 57 percent of the valid votes cast.
“Apart from being a movie star as many Ghanaians know me to be, I am also a parent and I know how expensive it is to give your children quality education in this country. It is for this and other reasons that I have decided to join the voices for ‘Change’ by declaring my support for the Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” Agya Koo mentioned.
BIBI BRIGHT
“I don’t really care whatever Ghanaians will say about me but the truth is I am suffering and anyone who will disagree with me is probably very okay and can afford to pay his rent, light bills and cater for their children…President Mahama is the one who has led Ghanaians to where we are now and it is time for change since he and his NDC have failed us. I know Nana Addo can do the magic to turn things round…
LUCKY MENSAH
Lucky Mensah has self-sponsored a campaign song which asks Ghanaians to vote for Nana Akufo Addo and the NPP. He has also started moving round with the party’s campaign team.
“I am one of the many Ghanaians who have realised we made a mistake in the part by campaigning for the wrong people to win electoral victory. The current mismanagement and galore of failed electoral promises is evident that we need to change the leadership of this country and give it back to the NPP to continue the good works of President Kufuor and I am prepared to campaign for the NPP with my song, campaign in my own small corner and also campaign on the party’s big stages.”
SOCRATE SAFO
Socrate, movie producer, director and chief executive of Movie Africa, is a pillar member of a pro-NPP group called Creative Arts For Change. He moves from one radio station to another on daily basis explaining what the NPP would do differently for Ghana’s creative arts sector.
“The dumsor-dumsor under John Mahama spoilt my movie business and that of several others, we have to change this government and bring back the NPP to save Ghana. Eight years under the NDC is enough.”
CWESI OTENG
“I am extremely disappointed in President Mahama’s administration. Ghana was promised that things will be better on so many grounds, where the spirit of the nation will be lifted, I just think that since we were promised a better Ghana, we have seen how it’s like, and we have seen both NDC and New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Every person should now take stock of his life for every government that promised us, we should check whether the economy is alright,” he wrote on his twitter page.
A-PLUS
“Most people are cowards and we continue to let a few persons behave as if they have brains that can control all the rest of us and that is why anyone would vote for the NDC this election. Such people do not believe in the principles of probity and accountability.
“Else how can we give our money to this government and then the government gives our money to someone to rare Guinea fowls and grow trees in the northern part of the country so as to create jobs and accelerate development in that part of the country? The persons took our money and later said the Guinea fowls have flown away and that the trees too have all been burnt. And yet Ghanaians are not asking for accountability. Is that not cowardice?” A-Plus asked when he appeared on the Morning Zoo on Starr FM.
WISA
The ‘Ekikimi’ hit maker has stated publicly that he would vote for Nana Addo. He also called on his fans and followers to vote for the NPP.
The musicians complained that under the NDC government, his studio sessions have been greatly affected because of the long period of erratic rationing of electricity.
DADA KD
“From the bottom of my heart, I am endorsing Nana Akufo-Addo and his running mate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to bring positive change to Ghanaians because there is so much mismanagement in the country…I will endorse them anytime the two of them contest for any position.”
FREDYMA
Fred Kyei Mensah, aka Fredyma, veteran music producer, has not hidden his agenda to endure the NPP wins the December polls. Fredyma is a regular creative arts pundit on about three radio stations and he uses that opportunity to propagate his pro-NPP agenda.
He argues that the NPP is in a better position to make live relatively comfortable for persons whose livelihood depends on creative arts.
MATILDA ASARE
The Kumasi-based actress is as active member of the ‘Agya Koo Agenda 57 for Nana Addo’ campaign task force and also part of the delegation which called on Nana Addo last week to pledge their support for him.
She has spoken to radio stations in Accra and Kumasi to confirm she is campaigning for Nana Addo and also calling on her fans to vote for the NPP.
