Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana (UG) has disclosed that the University has received a number of cash supports from donor groups for the implementation of various programmes which will position the nation’s premier university as a world class research intensive institution.
The Vice Chancellor made the disclosure at the university’s 2017 congregation held at the Great Hall last Saturday for 9,397 students of which 2,192 were post graduate students, 6,872 at Bachelors level and 333 at the Diploma level.
According to him, nine strategic teams who are part of a roadmap to drive the university’s agenda to “Go to University” status has since been inaugurated and are actively working.
He mentioned the receipt of eight grants with a total value of GH¢244, 302 and seventeen (17) awards valued at GH¢881, 733 from the Office for Research, Innovation and Development (ORID) while in 2016 the ORID disbursed 82 conference grants also with a total value of US$111,142.
For staff development initiatives, the university received Euro 1,359,975 from the Africa Regional International Staff Student Exchange (ARISE II) programme under the Intra-Africa Project.
He explained that the award enabled the university to host students for designated programmes over a period of time.
Prof. Oduro Owusu further mentioned that the University of Ghana as a lead Institution in partnership with Arhus University and University of Copenhagen have received a grant of 13M Danish Krone from the Danish Government(DANIDA/DFC) to implement the third phase of the Building of Stronger Universities(BSU) project.
The Vice Chancellor was happy that UG was selected by the World Health Organization (WHO) among seven other universities to host an international postgraduate training scheme for Masters and PhD students
Green Project
Speaking on the Vice Chancellors Green Project for greening the entire university campus, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu was happy that the Forestry Commission has made available 5000 tree seedlings and fifteen (15) Chainsaw machines, while Y&M Regeneration Limited has also donated another set of 10,000 seedlings.
He said 300 coconut and oil palm seedlings have been planted adding that plans are far advanced to launch a new afforestation drive on December, 2017.
